Former NTV presenter Janet Kanini died today, ending her long but brave battle with lung cancer. The news was broken by NTV news ancho Larry Madowo on his Twitter account. “My friend [Kanini] breathed her last this morning,” Madowo said. [watch her moving story in video at the end]

Kanini, a mother of two and wife turned cancer fighter, has been fighting Stage 4 Lung cancer and had been declared healed in 2016 after successful chemotherapy sessions.

In February 2016, the presenter said she had been cured of cancer. In a long post on her Facebook account, Kanini said an MRI scan conducted on her showed no signs of lesions in her liver, abdomen, bones, lymph nodes and lungs.

Kanini, the last born in a family of three girls, attributed her healing to a support network of friends, family and strangers praying for her and encouraging her. This emboldened her to found the Kanini 4 Africa organisation to push cancer campaign.

She made special mention of her husband who she said only recently revealed to her that doctors had given her less than six months to live after she was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.

The same year, Kenyans rallied behind her to raise funds for her treatment as well as others who were suffering the same fate. Kanini revealed that she was battling cancer in 2015 a month after she was diagnosed. She feared scolding and bashing from Kenyans when the money she had saved ran out when she underwent scanning and treatment in India.

She said that she was, however, surprised by the response she got from Kenyans. To her, it was one of the most overwhelming things Kenyans have ever done to a person. When the cancer in her liver was detected, it had reached stage four. Kanini was told she had about half a year to live but she would not allow it to get into her.

Kanini’s father also died from cancer, just two weeks after her wedding in March 2008.

Our condolences to friends and family during this time of mourning.
