In a move that would threaten seamless mail collection and delivery services throughout the country, postal workers in Kericho have announced plans to stage job walkouts within the coming few weeks following the failure of their employer, Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK), to pay their salaries.

Speaking on behalf of the postmen and women during a press conference on Tuesday, Kericho Posta Branch Secretary Mr Gideon Rop claimed that they had not been paid for four months and could not hold on any longer, especially since PCK had been repeatedly promising that salaries would be paid “in a few days’ time” whenever confronted about settling the arrears.

“This afternoon, we’ve called you (journalists) to address issues concerning employees of the Postal Corporation of Kenya. Our staff have endured a lot because of unpaid salaries. So today, we decided to speak to the press to let the management know how serious the situation is,” he said.

“This salary delay affects us and is a clear violation of employees’ basic rights. Many are now facing financial hardships and stress as they struggle to pay rent, school fees, and daily bills. We demand the immediate payment of salaries for staff at the Kericho branch,” added Rop.

He emphasized that all employees have the right to receive payment for the work they provide, and employers have a responsibility to pay their staff on time.

The workers said that their last wages were received in August 2024.
