Seasoned strategic communications practitioner Peter Mwaura Kimani has been picked by KCB Group to head its Corporate & Stakeholder Relations docket.

For the past 10 years, Mwaura has been serving as the Communications Manager at KCB Group, East Africa’s biggest financial services firm by profitability and assets base.

Mwaura previously worked as an editor and reporter at the Nation Media Group. He was amongst the first rookie journalists who were hired by the media house in 2007 to set up the Business Daily. He left the paper in 2011 after being promoted to be the News Editor at the EastAfrican, an NMG regional paper. He later left NMG to join KCB.

He started his journalism career at an intern at the Daily Nation, while still at the University of Nairobi for his undergraduate studies.

He is said to be a close ally of KCB Group CEO, Mr Paul Russo. “He (Mwaura) has been at the center of the bank’s publicity agenda for quite sometime, working closely with Mr. Russo and the former CEO Joshua Oigara,” said an editor in one of the dailies who worked with Mwaura during his stint at NMG.

His latest promotion was part of the latest leadership changes at KCB Group, announced three weeks ago. The changes saw the Group appoint Mark Mwongela Ngungi as the Group Director Strategy and Innovation, effective May 1, 2025. Judith Sidi Odhiambo was picked as the Head of Sustainability, after serving as the Head of Corporate & Regulatory Affairs for over a decade. It is understood that Mwaura replaced Judith in the now renamed and enhanced role.

“The changes are in line with our deliberate focus to build a critical mass of effective leaders to drive business growth and deliver on the Group’s ambitions, as we collectively build a people-driven, customer-focused organisation for the future,” Mr. Russo was quoted saying by the Business Daily.

In his new role, Mwaura is charged with driving KCB Bank’s Communications Strategy to deliver business growth. Going by his LinkedIn profile, he holds a Masters Degree in Strategic Management and a Bachelors Degree in Communications & Public Administration — both from the University of Nairobi. The profile shows that he is a Certified Public Secretary (CPSK) and a member of the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya and the Public Relations Society of Kenya (PRSK).

Mwaura is ardent golfer and serves in various community capacities amongst them the Kenya Golf Union (KGU) Board. He is one of the Trustees of Ruiru Sports Club, where he has previously served in other capacities.
