Construction of the Dhogoye Bridge at the mouth of River Yala in Usenge, Siaya County, is expected to improve transport between Siaya and Busia counties, where rising water levels have repeatedly disrupted movement and endangered lives.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is undertaking the project along the Bondo–Usenge–Osieko corridor, a route that has experienced interruptions during periods of high water, leaving communities struggling to access markets, schools, health facilities and other essential services.
The crossing, located where River Yala drains into Lake Victoria, has over the years become a hazardous point, with rising waters claiming lives and cutting off movement between communities.
Once completed, the bridge is expected to provide an all-weather crossing, allowing residents to travel more reliably and improving the transportation of goods between the two counties.
The project is also expected to support trade around the Lake Victoria basin by easing the movement of people and goods along the corridor.
Coordination among the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, local leaders, residents, and implementing agencies has supported construction progress by addressing operational challenges and sustaining work at the site.
The bridge is part of efforts to improve connectivity in areas where water levels and difficult crossing conditions have historically affected access to essential services and economic activities.
For communities along the corridor, the key test will be whether the completed bridge provides a safe and dependable crossing during periods of rising water, when movement has previously been interrupted.
