Broadway Bakery found itself holding the burning end of the stick over the weekend after a consumer bought a loaf of bread that appears to have overcooked on its upper side. The loaf, which had the upper part burnt to charcoal grey, attracted various reactions from online users, most of them poking fun at it.

A photo of the burnt loaf – possibly caused by excess heat – packed in Broadways branded paper, was shared on Facebook by one Albert Nyakundi.

“Broadway Bakery good morning?” Mr Nyakundi wrote. “I have consumed your products since my childhood, but this is conmanship. Hii ni sawa na kuvalia ngozi ya kondoo (this is like putting on sheep’s skin).

Mr Nyakundi did not offer more details on where he bought the loaf of bread or whether it was fresh or expired. A number of Facebook users shared their views, but Broadway Bakery had not officially responded to the matter as we published this article.

Elizabeth Mazrui said: Have you noticed that most bread these days tastes awful? Whenever possible I buy good quality bread from boutique bakeries.

Alberto Nyakundi Amenya BananaPeddler  said he had “experienced the same recently. This is reckless.”

Kevin Mwai M added some humour commenting that the buyer had eaten a burnt offering. “Ulikula burnt offering,” he said

Elizabeth Mburu: Please come and see Broadways bread (my best bread) is looking like a burnt offering

The issue came as Broadway bakery was introducing its smallest size bread in the market. “Quickmart shelves are now graced by the delicious presence of Kadogo Bread,” Broadway bakery said on its Facebook page. “You can now get your favourite Kadogo bread at the nearest @quickmartkenya close to you.”
