Safaricom on Friday, November 6 unveiled a new ad service on it’s Skiza ring-back tone platform targeting Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs).

Safaricom customers will be able to opt into the service by dialing *897#. Customers who sign up will receive free 5 MB data or free 1-minute calling time for every three adverts listened to for more than six seconds each.

When making calls, the audio advertisements will play as they wait for the other party to pick up.

Safaricom hopes that the new tool will be adopted by businesses around the country to help them increase their market reach and access new clients.

“The Skiza Ad Service is an exciting innovation that seeks to provide an excellent platform for businesses across the country by better connecting them with customers and equally taking advantage of our wide reach,” stated Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa.

By dialing *897#, Safaricom customers who opt in to the service will be able to view their accumulated resources to redeem them for data and minutes.

The accumulated data and minutes are valid until the first of every month. Once redeemed, they assume no-expiry validity on the customer’s line.

Customers can opt out of the service at any time, with customers who unsubscribe keeping accumulated resources to the first day of the following month.

The service was rolled out in collaboration with Adtones, who will provide the ad-serving platform.

“The platform will benefit millions of Safaricom customers with rewards and useful media information

“We are particularly proud to help thousands of Kenya entrepreneurs who will be using this new means of interacting and communicating with their target audiences in a transparent, cost effective and rewarding manner,” Adtones founders Ben Lynch and Gaspare Manos noted in a statement.

Ndegwa noted that the new service was in line with plans by Safaricom to support SMEs, with the CEO having previously described them as the lifeline of the economy.
