The Bomas International Convention Complex (BICC) is nearing completion as Kenya moves to strengthen Nairobi’s position as a global destination for business tourism, conferences and exhibitions.

Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo said the project is a direct manifestation of the 2025 Jamhuri Day theme, “Tourism, Wildlife and MICE”, while contributing to the national conversation on Kenya Beyond Vision 2030.

The transformation of the iconic Bomas of Kenya into a world-class conferencing and exhibitions hub is expected to bring together business tourism, cultural heritage and wildlife attractions in one destination.

The complex is strategically located next to Nairobi National Park, providing an opportunity to combine conference tourism with Kenya’s cultural and wildlife experiences.

Omollo said the infrastructure is critical to reimagining Nairobi as a competitive global commercial capital rather than merely a regional transit point.

The project, being undertaken under the supervision of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Engineers, is at an advanced stage, with tiling, glazing and roofing progressing alongside final interior works, external finishes and access roads.

Spread across more than 323,500 square metres, the BICC will feature an 11,000-delegate convention arena with 35 meeting rooms.

The facility will also have a 5,000-seat main auditorium, a 3,500-seat secondary hall, a Presidential Pavilion capable of accommodating up to 30 Heads of State and a 3,000-capacity banquet hall.

Future phases of the project will introduce luxury hotels, a shopping mall, food court and recreational facilities.

The development will also include a heliport and extensive parking, as well as an enhanced cultural zone and animal orphanage.

According to Omollo, the project carries significance beyond tourism and business.

For the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, he said, the development also has a strategic security dimension given the scale and international profile of the facility.

“A world-class international complex of this demands a safe and secure environment,” Omollo said.

He noted that the State has a responsibility to safeguard Nairobi, critical infrastructure, international visitors and major national assets.

Once completed, the BICC is expected to strengthen Kenya’s capacity to host major international conferences, exhibitions and high-level events while creating a platform for showcasing the country’s cultural and wildlife heritage.

The project is therefore being positioned as part of Kenya’s broader effort to attract international business, strengthen tourism and establish Nairobi as a more competitive global commercial centre.
