Ann Kananu was on Tuesday, November 16 sworn in as Governor of Nairobi County, making her the third Governor of the capital after Evans Kidero and Mike Mbuvi Sonko.
She joins the list of female Governors in Kenya which currently features Kirinyaga’s Ann Waiguru and Kitui’s Charity Ngilu.
The ceremony was held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) Comesa Grounds. It took place in accordance with provisions of the Assumption of the Office of Governor Act, 2019 and Article 74 of CoK, 2010 with Justice Lilian Mutende swearing in Kananu.
Kananu had been nominated as Deputy Governor in early 2020 by Sonko, who was then impeached by the Nairobi County Assembly in December last year. She previously served as Chief Officer, Disaster Management and Coordination at the county.
She became Deputy Governor in January 2021 after vetting and approval by the County Assembly. Her swearing in as Governor follows a failed legal bid by Sonko to retain his seat and stop Kananu from succeeding him.

After taking the oath of office, Kananu promised quality service delivery to Nairobians and to improve the city’s prospects as a destination for investment, business and leisure.
She also promised to work closely with the Gen. Mohammed Badi-led Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS). Sonko had in April last year signed a deed of transfer handing the national government control of several county functions. NMS was put in place to take charge of the transferred functions.
Kananu was born in Embu County in May 1980. She attended St. Michael Primary School and, later, Our Lady of Mercy Girls where she sat for her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 1999.
Kananu is the holder of a Bachelor of Science in Criminology and Security Management (Forensic and Criminal Investigation) from Dedan Kimathi University in 2016 (Second Class Upper Division). She also has a Diploma in Criminology and Security Management from St Paul’s University in 2013.
She worked as a Personal Assistant at H. Mogambi & CO. Advocates between 2003 and 2004 and as Customer Service & Personal Assistant to the CEO, MOKIR Enterprises between 2002 and 2003.
She then worked as a Security Supervisor in charge of Quality Control and Training at Kenya Airports Authority before joining City Hall in May 2018.
