World Travel Awards: Kenya Named Africa’s Leading Destination

Kenya walked away with various prizes at the 27th World Travel Awards, including the coveted gong for Africa’s Leading Destination.

The winners were announced in a virtual ceremony during the inaugural Africa Winners Day, with players in the travel, hospitality and tourism sectors celebrated.

The award for Africa’s Leading Destination was only one of several won by hotels and organizations based in Kenya. The selection process involves voting from industry experts and members of the public.

Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club was named Africa’s Leading Hotel, while Aberdare Country Club was crowned Africa’s Leading Green Hotel.

While Durban, South Africa was named Africa’s Leading City Destination, Nairobi won the award for Africa’s Leading Business Travel Destination.

The Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi added to the haul, as it was named Africa’s Leading Meetings and Conference Centre.

Fairmont The Norfolk scooped the award for Africa’s Leading City Hotel. Baobab Beach Resort & Spa in Diani was named Africa’s Leading Family Resort,

Villa Rosa Kempinski Nairobi, Kenya was named Africa’s Leading Luxury Hotel. Palacina Residences and Suites won Africa’s Leading Hotel Residences.

Notably, the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) was named Africa’s Leading Tourist Board.

The trophy haul comes at a time when the tourism industry has been reeling from the shocks of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lockdowns and restrictions on international travel have led several hotels and travel industry players to lose revenues.

The dire situation has forced business-owners to restructure, with numerous lay-offs, forced leaves and redundancies reported.
