The Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) and the Kenya Clinical Officers Association have called off a planned strike which was to be held on Friday November 30 after striking a deal with the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) management.

On November 21, the two unions had threatened that their members would down their tools after NHIF barred them from prescribing imaging for their beneficiaries saying it would not recognise their work.

In a joint statement to newsrooms, the insurer has promised to review the provision. NHIF however said that with a review of limitations, the council is obliged to submit gazzeted membership and a list of licensed institutions for the relevant review and applications to the NHIF operational process.

“NHIF held meetings with the unions which have resulted into amicable resolutions,” reads the statement.

The insurer wanted the clinical officers to register with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (KMPDU).
