The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has disowned documents that purported to show that that Nairobi businesswoman Agnes Kagure had evaded tax. KRA wrote to Ms Kagure’s lawyer explaining the ledgers, which were widely circulated, were not from the taxman’s system.
Ms Kagure, an award-winning insurance executive, had demanded to know the source of the documents which were being used to soil her image. “The instructions we have from the commissioner of domestic taxes is that he is unable to confirm the source of those ledgers,” the letter from KRA’s legal department to Ms Kagure’s lawyer, Michael Osundwa, says in part.
Ms Kagure shot to the public limelight after she emerged as a favourite to become the Deputy Governor of Nairobi County to succeed Polycarp Igathe who resigned from the post in January citing frustration from Governor Mike Sonko. Soon after her nomination Sonko, her opponents flooded media with unverified negative information, calculated to block her from getting the post by ruining her reputation.
In the letter, KRA clarified that printed ledgers usually bear the name of the person who printed, time and date, which were missing in the ledgers in circulation. The KR letter was sent by P.M. Mutuku on June 11th.

At the same time, the Law Society of Kenya has disowned a lawyer who had allegedly commissioned documents alleging Ms Kagure has no university education. “We confirm that according to our records we do not have an advocate by the above mentioned name. The purported practice… should be subject to criminal investigation,” said LSK’s Flowrence Muturi.
Ms Muturi was responding to Mrs Kagure’s Lawyer Nick Ndichu who sought to know if the person who commissioned the documents is a practising lawyer as claimed. Ms Kagure says there has been a malicious campaign to taint her image. “It is all politics and the aim is to injure my reputation,” she said.
