Why Kenyans hold on to home appliances beyond their life span

An online survey released by Jumia Kenya has revealed that 70% of Kenyan households keep their home appliances for more than their life span, citing sentimental attachment and uniqueness as opposed to age. Large home appliances like dishwashers, microwaves, washing machines, refrigerators and furniture have an average lifespan of up to 10 years and form a major investment for customers who often look for brands that will last long.

“We were surprised to discover quite how long they keep them though! Our survey shows that people keep them as long as possible – often more than 10 years,” says Jumia Head of Home and Living Appliances, Benard Kimutai, speaking when the leading online retailer released the survey.

Knowing the life expectancy of your appliances helps to effectively manage household budget. For example, non-stick pots and pans can last up to five years before peeling. For durability, pots and pans should be gently scrubbed with non-metallic sponge or brush.

What constitutes durable? Ramtons, a Kitchen & Home Appliances vendor on Jumia, says unless technology has changed and you could benefit from new features there is no need to replace the item if it’s working well.

Key reasons for replacing kitchen appliances are new technologies, damages, end of life. 17% of households admitted to replacing home appliances in less than three years because of new market trends while 13% of households said they changed appliances in a span of 4-7 years.

“Jumia continues to partner with trusted brands  to sell quality and affordable home appliances and offer up to one million assortment to choose from thus people do not need to hoard home appliances for longer than necessary,” said Kimutai.

Jumia is set to hold its Big Home Makeover Campaign from the 16th to 19th April with discounts of up to 60% on home appliances and other other items. The campaign will see a lucky winner walk away with a home makeover worth Ksh200,000. Keep an eye out for the hashtag #JazaNyumbaNaJumia to find out more details.

Among key brands to be featured during the campaign will be Philips, Ramtons, Samsung, Black&Decker, Bosch, Bruhm, Tefal and Saturn.
