KTN anchor gives glowing tribute to departing Joe Ageyo

KTN news anchor Mashirima Kapombe has delivered a glowing tribute to Managing Editor Joe Ageyo as he formally left the Mombasa Road-based station to take up a new role at Royal Media Services. Ageyo was recently appointed Editorial Director at RMS, which owns Citizen TV, Inooro TV and a host of radio stations.

In a post on her Instagram page, a teary Kapombe thanked Ageyo for believing in her and allowing her prosper in her career.  Ageyo joined KTN in 2000 as a general news reporter, but his work has focused on environmental stories.

Bitter sweet moment… Happy for him. But sad that he won’t be a few steps away from my desk anymore. Joe Ageyo, words fail me. The “kiwaru” in my throat… balancing tears… Thank you for believing in me. God bless you in your next assignment!” she wrote.

He is widely acclaimed as having pioneered Environmental Journalism on Kenyan television. He was the first Kenyan TV journalist to start a regular slot for an environmental feature, Ecojournal.

He has won prestigious awards such the “Environmental Journalist of the Year” in 2001 staged by the National Media Trust, a World Bank fellowship to attend the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg and is a fellow of the Climate Change Media Partnership (CCMP) and a Catto Fellow at the Aspen Institute in Colorado.

He worked for NTV from February 2005 to November 2012, holding various positions including the last one, as Head of News Production.

He has also previously worked for the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation as well as RMS. Two months ago, Western Kenya-based reporter Robert Wanyonyi also heaped praise on Ageyo, an indication that he has been a mentor to many.

It’s hard to say goodbye but that time has come. Having been with you since 2006, time has come for me to open another Chapter in my career.  I want to take this earliest opportunity to heartily thank you all and with a special mention of my mentor and boss brother Joe Ageyo and the entire Standard Group Management for according me the opportunity and platform to shine while using the very best platforms of Print/Radio & TV for all these years,” Wanyonyi wrote in his farewell letter.
