Kenyans mourn the death of Kitui West MP Francis Nyenze

Kenyans and the National Super Alliance (Nasa) are mourning the death of Kitui West MP Hon Francis Nyenze who passed on this morning.

On its side, Nasa has send its condolences to mourn the death Nyenze who passed on after a long battle with cancer.

The political coalition, which he belonged, termed him as a dedicated leader. “In Hon Nyenze’s death, Nasa has lost a dedicated and out-spoken leader who always stood by what he believed was good for his constituents and the nation,” read the Nasa statement in part. “We wish to convey heartfelt sympathies and sincere condolences to the people of Kitui West and the country at large at this tragic moment. Hon Nyenze served the people of Kitui West and the country with dedication cumulatively for decades.”

Others who condoled for the death of the Mp include Kiminini Mp Hon Chris Wamalwa who termed him as ‘humble, team player and peacemaker’.

Kalonzo Musyoka, former VP and a close ally of Hon Nyenze said, “In the passing of Francis, I, too, have personally been dealt a big blow since he was also great family friend.”

Also sending her condolences, Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu said, “The late Nyenze distinguished himself as a selfless leader who served the people of Kitui West with dedication and was thrice elected to serve them in 1997, 2013 and 2017.”

Mr Nyenze, Kanu-era Cabinet minister, successfully defended his Kitui West seat on a Wiper Democratic Movement party ticket in the August 8 General Election.

Born on June 2, 1957 at Kabati in Kitui County, Mr Nyenze was a close ally of Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Signs of his failing health came to the fore when he was sworn in to the 13th Parliament with an oxygen tank strapped on his body.

He was voted to Parliament for the first time on a KANU ticket in 1997 to represent Kitui West Constituency.

After 1997 elections, he was appointed the Minister for environment by President Moi and after a cabinet reshuffle in 2001 he was taken to the Ministry of Heritage and Sports.

In 2002 he was defeated by Winnie Nyiva Mwendwa for the Kitui West MPs Seat.

In 2013, He won again the Kitui West MPs seat on a wiper ticket under the CORD Coalition.

He was the Chairman of the Water Resources Management Authority (WRMA) and also the National Irrigation Board (NIB) director until 8th October, 2012 when his leadership was revoked.

During the MOU negotiations between CORD, Wiper and FORD Kenya, the post of Minority Leader in the National Assembly was reserved for the Wiper Party.

A father of three, he was a member of the Public Investments Committee in the 12th Parliament.
