Romantic Tuktuk for tourists hits the road

A three-wheeler model rickshaw, commonly known as Tuktuk, targeting tourists was has been launched in Mombasa. The Tuktuk, christened Ape Romanza – meaning a three-wheeler for romance – was designed by Car and General in partnership with Piaggio company.

Car and General company coast regional manager Wallace Chege said “the new Tuktuk is made specifically for tourists due to their luxurious and convertible model aimed for leisure seekers.”

He said the Tuktuk was introduced to provide stylish and more comfortable mode of transport to meet the tastes of both local and international visitors. The Tuktuk is convertible and one can open its canvas to get fresh air and cool breeze when it is sunny and close it when it rains.

The launch took place at the Makadara grounds and was  attended by scores of Tuktuk operators.  The cost of these new Tuktuk, which uses petrol is Ksh430, 000 while the old models go for Ksh360, 000. “Mombasa being a tourist resort town, we in the transport industry have chosen to come up with low cost but comfortable mode of transport,” said the official.

Saying the Tuktuk industry has offered employment to nearly 20,000 youth, Mr Chege called on both the county and national governments to support the sector which generates a daily revenue of more than Sh20 million.
