Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Monday sharply criticised opposition figures led by Rigathi Gachagua, accusing them of stoking division and undermining national unity, and urged them to cease early campaigning for the 2027 elections and focus on constructive dialogue.
Speaking at the Kitui Central Constituency Empowerment Programme at Ithookwe Showground, Kindiki expressed dismay at what he called divisive rhetoric from seasoned politicians, warning that such tactics are only aimed at undermining government’s efforts to foster unity and development.
“We have come here for development, not for campaigning. I urge those leaders who are travelling around the country politicking to stop and wait for 2027,” the DP said, noting that the ruling Kenya Kwanza administration remains committed to fulfilling its campaign promises despite economic challenges inherited from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kindiki outlined a raft of government initiatives focused on boosting development in Kitui County and beyond. He highlighted a Ksh2 billion last-mile electricity connectivity project to link 16,000 households across Kitui, with 2,000 in Kitui Central alone.
The DP issued updates on the 225km Kibwezi-Mutomo-Kitui Road, saying Ksh800 million was recently approved for compensation through the National Land Commission, resolving its long-standing delays. Additionally, he said Ksh975 million has been allocated for the construction of Kyuso-Tseikuru-Tharaka Nithi Road, connecting the zone to the neighbouring Tharaka and Meru Counties.

He also detailed plans to upgrade that Ithookwe Showground, set to host this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations, and spoke highly of the ongoing working nationwide projects, including subsidised fertilisers to boost agriculture and the construction of 400 modern markets, five of which are in Kitui County. These markets will include ICT hubs offering free Wi-Fi to empower youth entrepreneurship.
“Our youth will utilise the ICT hubs within these markets to create employment and will also benefit from free Wi-Fi provided at the hubs,” said Kindiki.
He praised the government’s housing programme, which has employed over 250,000 youths at construction sites, and urged young Kenyans to register for the Climate Works Programme, running from 3 to 5 June 2025, which aims to employ 110,000 more.
On healthcare, Kindiki urged citizens to register with Taifa Care under the Social Health Authority (SHA) to access universal health coverage benefits.
The DP was speaking in company of senior government officials, including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, and several MPs and local leaders.
