Police arrested a former member of parliament (MP) for allegedly possessing fake US dollar bills with a total value equivalent to over Ksh400 million at the current exchange rate.

According to court documents, Abdi Koropu Tepo, an ex-MP who served Isiolo South from 2017 to 2022, was arrested on July 25, 2024, at a house in Donholm Estate with 34,200 counterfeit USD currency notes in 100 denominations.

On Monday, July 29, he was charged with possessing fake foreign money and illegally having a CZ 75 semi-automatic pistol and 80 rounds of 9 mm calibre without a valid license from the Firearms Licensing Board.

Appearing before senior principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi of Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi, the former lawmaker denied all the counts, which also included conspiracy to produce and distribute counterfeit euro banknotes after the police nabbed him with 300 pieces of soft paper that approximate its proprietary blend.

He was released on a Ksh300,000 bond with an alternative cash bail of Ksh100,000.

The case will be mentioned on August 12, 2024, for pretrial.
