A former Kenya Navy officer and two others have been arrested and face multiple counts following the theft of a tuktuk in Kamulu in Ruai, Nairobi County.
The three, Peter Kamau Muniu (the ex-naval officer), Timothy Irungu Karimi and Antony Maina Njoroge, were arrested Thursday in a raid conducted by detectives from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters and DCI Ruai.
Authorities announced yesterday that they had arrested the three men as part of an auto theft ring that has been stealing three-wheelers and motorcycles from commuter parking lots and driveways in Kamulu and the entire Ruai area.
“The three who are believed to be the architects of the illegal dealings were pursued and arrested following a tuktuk theft report by the devastated owner, who parked it on Tuesday night after work but found it missing the next day,” said DCI in a statement announcing their arrest.
A police search of the ex-Kenya Navy officer’s home in Kamulu led to the recovery of the stolen tuktuk of number plate KTWB 975T and one motorcycle of make Jin Cheng KMDN 972B (maroon) and a Nissan Wingroad registration number KCD 143Y (silver) believed to be used in distributing dismantled parts of stolen vehicles.
Law enforcement officials said they were confident that they would soon arrest two other suspects who sneaked away during the raid as investigations into the matter are ongoing.
Meanwhile, the three captured suspects are remanded to Ruai Police Station pending arraignment.
