The Board of the Kenya Red Cross Society has announced that Dr Asha Mohammed will be stepping down from her role as the Secretary-General.

In a statement, Kenya Red Cross Governor and Chairman Geoffrey Kipngetich Korir said that Dr Mohammed is stepping down for personal reasons, effective April 14, 2023.

Dr Mohammed will in the next few months support the leadership transition as she hands over in an acting capacity to the Deputy Secretary General Dr Ahmed Idris.

“The Board is confident that Dr Asha will be able to oversee an effective transition process with the support of the board, staff, volunteers and partners of the Kenya Red Cross,” Korir said.

Dr Asha has been the Secretary-General since January 2020 and prior to that held the positions of Deputy Secretary General and Director for Health and Social Services at the Kenya Red Cross.

“Her role as Secretary General coincided with a very difficult global and local humanitarian context, from responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, to the worst drought the country has experienced in the last several decades. Under her leadership, Kenya Red Cross has lived up to its commitment of being “always there”, responding to emergencies and supporting communities. The Board is grateful for her service, passion and commitment,” Korir added.

“Dr Asha has been an inspiration to the community of Staff, Volunteers, Partners and Members of the Kenya Red Cross Society, who look forward to her support in the future as a community leader and life member of the Kenya Red Cross.”
