In his 8-year stint at Royal Media Services (RMS), Johnson Mwakazi became a household name and one of the most recognizable faces on Kenyan television. Between 2006 and 2014, he hosted various broadcasts on Citizen TV including the popular Power Breakfast show on weekday mornings.

His deep voice also saw him become the voice of the TV station, voicing various promos and ads that ran on the station. Mwakazi left RMS in May 2014 and went on to several senior roles in media and marketing – including Brand Ambassador for Pan Africa Life Assurance, CEO of Fountain Media Group and, most recently, Director of his own company Royal Voice International.

It is his venture, Royal Voice International, that has allowed Mwakazi to keep cashing checks from his former employer years after he left. RMS is only one of Royal Voice’s many clients. The company offers production services and voice-overs for adverts and documentaries, conference moderation and corporate trainings.

Mwakazi continues to monetize his voice through the venture, which he established in 2013. He can still be heard on several Citizen TV promos and advertisements.

It was his voice that landed him at RMS in the first place, even before he had a Journalism degree. Born and raised in Kibera, Mwakazi has previously stated that he faced poverty growing up and after finishing high school, the situation at home got even tougher as his mother lost her job. Mwakazi turned to Kenya National Theatre (KNT) seeking acting gigs to eke a living.

At KNT, he met someone who noticed his voice and eloquence, and alerted him to an opening for voice-over artists at RMS-owned Hot 96. He landed the role and began voicing advertisements – allowing him to put food on the table.

Eventually, he applied for an opening at Citizen Tv which is also under the RMS banner, and ended up hosting The Power Breakfast show. Two years into his time  at RMS, that he enrolled at Daystar University for a Communications degree and graduated  in 2013.
