One of Kenya’s most popular comedians has become the latest celebrity to jump into the 2022 political field. MC Jesse, real name Jasper Muthomi, has launched his bid to become the next Member of Parliament (MP) for South Imenti Constituency.

Jesse on Wednesday, November 10 made clear his intentions to deliver for the people of South Imenti and Kenyan youth across the country. He was endorsed by a section of elders who offered him their support and handed him traditional weapons in a symbolic gesture. South Imenti is currently represented by Murungi Kathuri.

The comedian is best known for his long-running stints as a constant feature on the Daniel Ndambuki-led Churchill Show and as host of Churchill Raw. He also runs his own marketing firm BrandFace Media Ltd and hosts an online talk-show, Jesse Junction, which he started after the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

“Talking of what we’re going to change in South Imenti, besides that I’m going to be a national leader. Its not just South Imenti that I’m going to represent the youths in this country. I’m going with the experience of what we have been doing in the industry so far,” he stated.

He thanked the elders from Igoji, South Imenti for their endorsement, disclosing that his campaign team had been undertaking the groundwork ahead of the race.

Highlighting his credentials, Jesse noted consultancy work he had done for various governance institutions as well as his education. The comedian graduated in 2019 from Daystar University with a Bachelors Degree in Advertising, and began pursuing a Masters in Political Science.

In past interviews, Jesse has revealed his fascination with history, politics and governance. For a long time, he has also reiterated his desire to positively influence the lives of young Kenyans.

“I am well versed in leadership and African history. I know the history of Kenya before independence. I have read most journals about our president, the deputy president, Kiraitu Murungi our governor (who he describes as a very good friend) – like did you know Kiraitu is the only politician who has never lost an election in this country? I research about world leaders – mostly African leaders. I know the histories of Congo, Uganda, South Africa, Libya, Tunisia and others like the back of my hand,” he stated in a 2020 interview with Standard.

He credits Daniel Ndambuki alias Churchill with giving him his start in the industry, describing the legendary comedian and radio host as an icon.

“We are yet to get to Canaan, but maybe God will send a Joshua, maybe me, MCA Tricky, Professor Hamo or anyone of us will be the Joshua to take us to Canaan. That’s the respect and honour I have for my brother Churchill and I love him so much,” he stated in a March 2020 event, adding: “We met in a toilet. I told him I wanted to go back to Meru a different person and change the lives and mindsets of young people.”
