Why Discipline Off the Pitch Matters as Much as Goals On It

The Harambee Stars are delivering on the promise of CHAN 2024, historic victories, resilient performances, and a surge of national pride. But while the football has been thrilling, recent incidents of crowd trouble risk undoing the goodwill Kenya has worked so hard to build.

CAF has already issued sanctions following chaos during a Harambee Stars match, citing breaches of security protocols and fan misbehaviour. These penalties are not just embarrassing; they threaten Kenya’s long-term ambitions including the coveted role of co-hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The responsibility for a world-class tournament does not rest solely on the shoulders of government or security agencies. It is a shared duty involving the Football Kenya Federation, CAF, match organisers, media, stewards, and, critically, the fans themselves.

Most supporters have done the right thing, buying tickets, turning up early, and cheering within the rules. But it only takes a small number ignoring instructions, jumping barriers, or pushing through gates to cause a security breach. Such actions create safety risks, delay kick-offs, and damage Kenya’s image on the continental stage.

CAF’s expectations are clear: host nations must guarantee safe, orderly, and inclusive matchday experiences. Failure to meet those standards invites fines, reduced stadium capacity, or worse, the loss of hosting rights for future events. For Kenya, this is about more than avoiding punishment; it’s about safeguarding our football reputation for years to come.

CHAN 2024 has shown that football is a powerful unifying force. Families, first-time attendees, and long-time grassroots supporters have come together in a way rarely seen in Kenyan sport. This diversity in the stands is something to celebrate and protect. It demands that every fan plays their part in ensuring civility, safety, and respect.

Operationally, the organisers must continue improving communication on ticketing, match schedules, prohibited items, and entry procedures. Clear, repeated messaging, combined with fans arriving early, can ease congestion and enhance the atmosphere rather than fuel frustration.

The Harambee Stars have proven that unity and discipline can overcome the toughest challenges on the field. If fans mirror that same discipline off it, we can not only see Kenya go deep in CHAN 2024 but also strengthen our case to bring Africa’s biggest football event home in 2027.

Protecting the game isn’t just about defending against an opponent; it’s about defending Kenya’s football future.
