Volvo Cars will be the first automaker to integrate Google’s Gemini AI chatbot into its vehicles, the company revealed Tuesday, building on its long-standing collaboration with the tech giant.
Unlike the present Google Android Auto, which mirrors simplified phone functions and will integrate Gemini maybe later after this year, Volvo’s Android Automotive-powered vehicles, marketed as Google built-in, will deploy the AI in the coming weeks, in many of its electric and hybrid lineup.
Android Auto is a smartphone application that mirrors the phone’s interface onto the car’s display, but requiring a smartphone connection. Android Automotive OS (AAOS), on the other hand, is a full-fledged operating system built directly into the car, offering a more holistic experience without relying on a phone – like the car is run on Android.

The development builds on Volvo’s existing collaboration with Google, which has already brought features like high-definition maps and voice-controlled climate systems to the AAOS car computers in models such as the EX90 released in 2024.
Now with Gemini, the Swedish automaker aims to elevate this further, enabling “natural” conversations with the car’s infotainment system, the central hub for entertainment, information, and control of various vehicle use functions.
Drivers will be able to ask the cutting-edge AI complex questions, from navigation assistance and language translation to querying the vehicle’s user manual and mechanical diagnostics, without taking their eyes off the road. “This technology reduces cognitive load, enhancing safety and convenience,” said Alwin Bakkenes, head of global software engineering at Volvo Cars.
Importantly, unlike the previous systems, which rely heavily on cloud connectivity, since this new setup will allow for on-device processing, it will enable faster responses and functionality even in areas with spotty internet access.
Volvo’s adoption of Gemini comes as automakers race to differentiate their latest models in a crowded market. Tesla has leaned heavily on its proprietary AI for features like Full Self-Driving, while Mercedes-Benz and BMW have partnered with big tech companies like NVIDIA to enhance their own systems.
