Two police officers have been arrested for stealing ksh 800,000 from a Malian national, Bathily Abdoulaye, during a raid at his Kilimani residence on Saturday.

The officers were arrested during a sting operation at Yaya Centre by colleagues from the elite Flying Squad following intelligence the money was to be delivered there.

According to a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the money was stolen when the officers went to arrest the foreigner for reasons that are not yet clear.

“In the process of the arrest the officers ransacked his house and took the following items: 8,000 US Dollars,Ksh 83,000, 3 Rolex watches each valued at 15,000 US Dollars, his passport and also transferred Ksh.30,000 from his Mobile phone number to another Mobile phone number,” the DCI tweeted.

Abdoulaye was then escorted to Central Police Station where he was later released without being officially booked in the Occurrence Book. Thereafter, the same officers still continued demanding from him an additional US$8,000 which prompted him to report to the DCI.

Flying Squad officers laid an ambush at Yaya Centre where the money was supposed to be delivered and in the process managed to arrest Moses Njogu Njagi who led officers to Central Police Station where Kelvin Ndosi, a DCI officer, was arrested. More officers are being sought.

“The passport of the complainant was recovered from the arrested officer. The Flying Squad is still looking for the other rogue officers including one driver attached to the County Criminal Investigations Officer, Nairobi Area,” the statement added.

Many Kenyans hailed the DCI for the good work it is doing since the appointment of George Kinoti as director as others said the Malian’s activities in the country should also be probed.

Others lamented how police officers are extorting bribes from ordinary citizens and businesses, including matatu crews and prostitutes.

The arrest comes hours after police officers were arrested in Nakuru following a robbery incident in the area.
