Two Kenyan companies named in Time’s top 50 organisations changing the world

Kenyan data and technology companies Ona and BRCK have been named among the top 50 genius companies changing the world in 2018 by respected American weekly publication Time Magazine.

In its first annual list recognising innovative businesses that are changing the way we work, live and play, Time recognized Ona, one of the five African firms on the list for its solutions that have contributed immensely to business, health and social sectors.

BRCK was feted for connecting people in rural areas and without access to fibre networks to the internet.

The list includes American giant companies Apple and Disney as well as popular VOD platforms Amazon and Netflix.

British biopharmaceutical giant GW, known for its multiple sclerosis treatment product nabiximols which was the first natural cannabis plant derivative to gain market approval in any country, also made the cut.

Ona is the developer of OpenSRP, a mobile application that helps frontline health workers to electronically register and track the health of patients residing in rural areas.

Another application that got Ona the recognition is Canopy, a platform that helps organisations understand data they have collected, and draw key insights, review historical trends which in turn helps them make informed decisions

Time Magazine also recognised mSpray and Reveal, applications co-developed by Ona and Zambian application developer Akros.

mSpray is a mobile phone technology built to improve malaria control efforts and monitor human exposure to malaria control pesticides.

Reveal is an application that helps organisations track precision in service deliverly.

Speaking after his company was recognised, Ona CEO Matt Berg who was also one of Time’s 100 most influential people in 2010, elated by the development, welcomed the honourable mention saying that it was an indication that the company is headed in the right direction.

“As a young company coming up on our five-year anniversary, this is great affirmation that we’re pushing in the right direction and making an impact.” said Mr. Berg.

Ona is a company with 32 employees including data analysts, public health experts and designers with main operations in Kenya and the US.
