There is notable excitement in Kenya after the government announced over 1,000 job opportunities for motorcycle riders and nannies in Dubai, a dream destination for most unemployed Kenyans.
Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua said 600 jobs are available for boda boda riders and 500 nannies. In a statement on Thursday, 5th December, 2024, posted on his social media pages, the CS stated that officials from a United Arab Emirates company would be in Kenya this coming week to interview and hire the motorcycle riders.
But there is a catch in the deal: the jobs come at a high price. Successful candidates both boda boda and nannies will be required to cough out Ksh170,000 to finance the process. If you factor in the air-ticket, the amount crosses the Ksh200,ooo mark, but the proposed salaries – upwards of Ksh100,000 – promise to compensate that expense. The government says the amount can be defrayed using bank loans as successful candidates would repay from their earnings.
Further, the notice indicated that for 26 working days a month, the riders will receive a salary of 2,925 dirhams (approximately Ksh104,000 Kenya tax-free).
Qualifications for the 600 Riders
Candidates will be required to have a valid Kenyan passport or proof of an e-Citizen application in progress. Additionally, they ought to have a current Certificate of Good Conduct or proof of an e-Citizen application in progress and a valid rider’s license.

However, experience is not a mandatory requirement although it is an added advantage.“Bodaboda riders are highly encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will undergo four months of training in Dubai, during which the company will assist them in obtaining UAE riding licenses,” stated the notice.
Payment
For every delivery trip, riders will be earning 7.5 dirhams (Ksh263), having a daily minimum average of 15 trips.
However, riders with initiative can make upwards of 30 deliveries per day, increasing their earnings.
The hiring company will provide free accommodation, a work motorcycle which is also maintained by the company, comprehensive medical care and a work visa.
The company will not, however, cover pre-arrival costs which include:
- Payment to HR provider in Dubai: 2,200 dirhams = Ksh81,400
- Airfare: Ksh40,000
- Medical fee: Kshs. 16,500 (non-refundable, to be paid upfront)
- Processing fees (visa, paperwork, etc.) Ksh30,000
TOTAL: Ksh167,900
“Banks are aligned to offer loans to cover these costs, allowing employees to repay once they begin working in Dubai,” the notice says. “The medical fee is paid first, and the remaining costs can be settled after passing the medicals. This ensures no unnecessary losses.”
