Reuben Odanga, the producer behind the popular Kenyan telenovela Selina, is set to debut his new series, Lazizi, on Maisha Magic Plus this October. Starring seasoned actors Jackie “Wilbroda” Nyaminde and Mwaniki Mageria, the new production marks another strategic investment in high-production local content for the African market.

The Drama of Power and Family Secrets

Lazizi centers on Mark Mbotela (played by Mwaniki Mageria), a sugarcane tycoon whose political ambitions are driven less by public service and more by a need for protection. The narrative unfolds as Mbotela’s past resurfaces, threatening to dismantle his carefully constructed public image.

The series promises to delve into a complex web of buried secrets, a dangerous love affair, and intense family rivalries, all of which could expose Mbotela’s darkest truths.

Odanga, the show’s producer and director, noted that the series draws inspiration from the landscapes of Muhoroni, a region known for its sprawling sugarcane plantations. “I wanted to tell a story from that region, something we haven’t done before,” he stated, emphasizing a desire to create a relatable narrative for the local audience. The show will blend Swahili, English, and Luo languages, a deliberate choice to enhance its regional authenticity and appeal.

A Deep Bench of Kenyan Talent

The cast of Lazizi brings together a mix of well-known and emerging Kenyan talent. Mwaniki Mageria, previously seen in The Chocolate Empire, portrays the ambitious Mark Mbotela. Jackie Nyaminde, who gained recognition for her role in Country Queen, takes on the role of Amina, Mbotela’s former partner and baby mama, who battles with alcoholism and depression.

The ensemble cast includes:

  • Hellen Keli (Single Kiasi): As Bridget Mbotela, Mark’s controlling and entitled wife.
  • Isaac Okoyo (Reckless): Plays Shaffie Mbotela, Mark’s estranged, free-spirited son.
  • Zandie Andika (Sky Girls – Born to Fly): Portrays Richard Mbotela, Mark’s stepson and the heir apparent to the family’s business.
  • Joel Otukho (Country Queen): As Juma, a long-serving factory manager with critical knowledge of the Mbotela family’s secrets.

Maisha Magic Plus Channel Head, Margaret Mathore, expressed confidence in the new series, highlighting its alignment with the network’s strategy to produce “compelling local stories that resonate with our audiences.” Mathore is banking on Lazizi to replicate the success of Selina, affirming the strength of homegrown productions on the platform.

Lazizi is set to premiere on Monday, October 6, airing weekdays at 8:00 PM exclusively on Maisha Magic Plus. The show is a Multan Production, with a writing team led by Clifford Okumu (Pete).
