Within the space of just two months, TECNO has released both the SPARK 50 Pro and the SPARK 50 5G, intensifying its push into the fiercely competitive budget smartphone segment.

Priced to appeal to entry-level and lower-midrange buyers, both phones target users upgrading from older devices or entering the smartphone market for the first time. The central question for potential buyers: Does the “Pro” badge deliver meaningful advantages, or does the 5G variant offer better overall value?

1. Design and Build: Style Versus Substance

Design preferences remain subjective, but the two phones take noticeably different approaches. The Spark 50 Pro offers bolder colour options, including a vibrant Dynamic Orange, alongside more subdued finishes. At a slim 7.8mm, it feels sleek in the hand.

The Spark 50 5G adopts a cleaner aesthetic with a horizontal camera bar and more elegant shades such as Champagne Gold, Mint Green, and Fantasy Purple. Though slightly thicker at 8.18mm, reviewers found it comfortable for extended use and more premium in appearance.

On durability, the Pro pulls ahead with IP68 and IP69 ratings, enabling it to handle immersion and high-pressure water jets—rare for devices in this price class. The 5G model carries an IP64 rating and MIL-STD-810H compliance, sufficient for dust and splash resistance but less robust against full water exposure.

The IP code is an international standard that measures protection against solid particles like dust and liquids like water. It consists of two digits:

* First digit (0–6): Protection against solids/dust.
* Second digit (0–9): Protection against water/liquids.

In simple terms: An IP6|4 phone is fully dust-proof and can handle everyday splashes or light rain, but you should not submerge it or expose it to strong water streams like a shower or pool. On its part, IP6|8 phones are highly water-resistant and can survive accidental drops in water, swimming pools, or heavy rain far better than IP64 models.

2. Performance: Connectivity vs. Camera Optimization

Under the hood, the two phones diverge significantly. The Spark 50 5G is powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 6400 chipset, which supports 5G connectivity and delivers capable multitasking and gaming performance for its class.

The Spark 50 Pro, despite the “Pro” designation, uses the Dimensity G100 Ultimate processor. It offers lower peak CPU speeds and is limited to 4G connectivity. However, this platform reportedly provides stronger support for advanced camera features.

Both models come with 4GB, 6GB or 8GB of RAM, 128GB or 256GB storage, and a dedicated microSD card slot for expandable memory.

3. Display and Audio: Nearly Identical Twins

Both models share a 6.78-inch IPS LCD panel with 720p resolution and a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. For budget handsets, these specifications are respectable, offering fluid scrolling and decent everyday viewing, complete with a modern punch-hole selfie camera rather than an outdated notch.

Stereo speakers tuned by DTS further enhance the media experience on both devices.

The Spark 50 5G retains one practical advantage for traditionalists: a 3.5mm headphone jack, absent on the Pro. For users who still rely on wired earphones, this remains a meaningful inclusion.

4. Camera: Sensor Quality Separates the Pair

On the rear, both phones headline with a 50MP main camera, but the implementation differs. The SPARK 50 Pro benefits from Sony’s more modern LYTIA 600 (LYT-600) sensor, widely used in contemporary mid-range devices and generally delivering stronger dynamic range, detail and low-light performance.

The SPARK 50 5G uses an older Sony Exmor sensor with a slightly wider f/1.8 aperture compared to the Pro’s f/1.9. Real-world image quality will likely favour the Pro in most conditions, particularly given its enhanced processing capabilities.

5. Battery Life and Charging

Battery capacity is a highlight for both. The Spark 50 5G leads with a sizable 6500mAh cell, while the Pro offers 5600mAh or 6000mAh variants depending on the market. The 5G model’s larger battery provides noticeable endurance advantages for heavy daily use.

Charging speeds favour the Pro at up to 60W versus the 5G model’s 45W. In practice, many consumers may prefer the extra capacity over marginally faster top-ups.

6. Pricing

The Tecno Spark 50 5G retails between Ksh26,000 and Ksh30,000 depending on the RAM configuration. The Tecno Spark 50 Pro is priced higher, ranging from Ksh28,000 to Ksh40,000 due to upgraded internals, superior camera, a 120Hz curved AMOLED display, and a 60W fast-charging battery.

That’s it for today.
