The redevelopment of Sio Port Pier in Busia County is set to strengthen trade, transport and economic activity around the Lake Victoria Basin, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo has said.
Omollo said Lake Victoria’s vast shoreline holds significant untapped potential in trade, transport, fisheries and livelihoods, with the government seeking to unlock the opportunities through its Blue Economy agenda under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
He said the redevelopment of Sio Port Pier is part of government efforts to transform lakeside infrastructure and position the facility as a stronger gateway for commerce and connectivity.
The project will include a modern pier and jetty, a strengthened waterfront and improved navigation channels, alongside cargo handling and storage facilities.
It will also feature a passenger waiting area and offices for government agencies supporting trade and border operations.
According to Omollo, separate berthing areas will be established for small boats and commercial vessels, a development expected to improve safety and efficiency on the water.
The project is being implemented by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and constructed by Kenya Shipyards Limited.
Omollo said the upgraded facility will support inland water transport, cross-border trade and the creation of new livelihoods for communities around the Lake Victoria Basin.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is also supporting the initiative through enhanced border surveillance, maritime security coordination and multi-agency operations.
The measures are intended to support safe and efficient port activities as the government seeks to expand economic activity along Lake Victoria and improve connectivity through inland water transport.
