Investing in employees, embracing innovation and maintaining consistent service standards are the foundations of success in Kenya’s increasingly competitive hospitality industry.
Speaking during an interview with Business Today, Sentrim Hotels & Lodges Managing Director Paren Hirani said Kenya’s tourism sector has enormous potential, citing its diverse tourism attractions, growing domestic travel market and rising international interest.
To tap this growth potential, businesses must continually innovate and deliver authentic guest experiences to remain competitive.
“Guests today are looking beyond accommodation; they seek experiences, authenticity and meaningful connections,” he said.
He added that long-term success also depends on operational discipline, strategic partnerships and the ability to adapt to evolving consumer trends. He added that hospitality sector managers need to combine emotional intelligence, resilience and adaptability to respond to changing customer expectations and operational challenges.
The Sentrim chief said while operational excellence keeps a hotel business running, strategic planning determines its long-term direction. He argued that growth should not be measured solely by the number of properties a company owns but also by the strength of its brand, investment in people and ability to create lasting value for customers.
“For hospitality brands, growth is not simply about adding more properties. It is also about strengthening brand identity, understanding evolving consumer trends, investing in people and delivering long-term value,” Hirani said.
Hirani also underscored the importance of talent management, describing employees as the hospitality industry’s greatest asset. He said organisations must continuously invest in staff training, mentorship and professional development to build future leaders and improve service delivery.
“Great hospitality brands are built by great people,” he said.
On technology, Hirani said digital transformation has significantly improved hotel operations through digital reservations, customer engagement platforms, automation and data-driven decision-making.
However, he stressed that technology should complement, and not replace, the human element of hospitality.
“I believe technology should enhance hospitality rather than replace its essence. Hospitality remains, first, a people business,” he said.
Hirani expressed optimism about the future of Kenya’s hospitality industry, saying Sentrim continues to evaluate expansion opportunities that align with its long-term growth strategy, including the possibility of entering the beach hospitality segment.
He encouraged young professionals entering the industry to remain patient, embrace learning and value frontline experience, saying some of the most important leadership lessons are learned through direct interaction with guests.
“No experience is insignificant, and some of the greatest lessons come from frontline roles where one develops a deep understanding of guests and service delivery,” he said.
