Interior Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo has called on Kenyan football fans to exercise discipline and responsibility during the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), warning that the country’s future as a host of international tournaments could be at stake.

In a strongly worded statement, Dr Omollo emphasised that hosting CHAN 2024 is not just a sporting achievement but a national honour that comes with global scrutiny and expectations.

“Hosting the CHAN 2024 tournament is a national honour for Kenya and a responsibility on all of us,” said the PS. “It is a proud moment for Kenya as a world-renowned sporting nation.”

He emphasised that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has established strict guidelines on safety, security, and fan behaviour, and any violations—even those occurring outside stadium premises—could result in severe penalties, including disqualification from future hosting bids.

“Our conduct as fans has serious national implications,” he noted. “Incidents like jumping barriers, shoving, or vandalism reflect poorly on our sporting culture and our level of civility.”

Dr. Omollo warned that such negative actions could damage Kenya’s reputation and affect its chances of successfully bidding to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027. He noted that every match during CHAN is being viewed as an audition by CAF and other stakeholders to assess Kenya’s readiness for bigger events.

“CAF and other stakeholders are closely observing not just the games, but the overall fan experience and security management,” he added. “Our stadium upgrades mean little if our fans do not cooperate with the security and stewards on the ground.”

He called on fans to match their patriotism with responsibility by arriving early for games, wearing team colours, observing stadium rules, and supporting the Harambee Stars respectfully and enthusiastically.

“Our success depends on collective discipline,” he said. “Let us not allow a few negative incidents to ruin the efforts of thousands.”

Dr. Omollo also applauded the efforts of security personnel, urging fans to support them by cooperating fully and respecting all protocols.

“The whole world is watching; let’s represent ourselves well,” he concluded.

The statement comes as Kenya continues to host CHAN matches at various upgraded stadiums, with fans turning out in large numbers. The message serves as both a warning and a call to pride, as Kenya positions itself for greater sporting milestones in the future.
