Migori Governor Okoth Obado is currently being grilled by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives in Kisumu over the murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno.
The governor has protested his innocence following the brutal killing of the student, whose body was found in a forest despite reports that he had a romantic relationship with her. Sharon was seven-months pregnant at the time of her killing. He body was discovered dumped in a forest and a post-moterm report indicates she was stabbed seven months, including through the stomach which killed her infant.
According to some accounts, Barack Oduor, the Daily Nation journalist in whose company the student was abducted, had made contacts with Obado through a vocal ODM official, and may have visited him at least once at his home in Rapogi, Migori.
There are also claims that Obado had promised to buy her a house in Nairobi as well as provide access to tenders at the county government before abandoning her.
Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji had promised that everyone associated with the murder, including Obado would be grilled even as questions were raised over the delay to grill him as a person of interest.
Obado’s personal assistant Michael Oyamo was set to appear before a Homa Bay court on Tuesday morning to take a plea. He has been in police custody but the court declined to grant police more time to hold him as investigations continue.
