NSE yields Sh1.4 billion as Safaricom CEO returns

Weekly trading dropped Ksh1.37 billion at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) in the week that saw the return of Safaricom chief executive Bob Collymore.

At Ksh1.73 billion, the week ending August 10 saw a total of 58.7 million shares traded as against the 92.8 million shares valued at Ksh3.1 billion posted the previous week.

Indices on the other hand soared with the NSE 20 Share Index gaining 4.77 points to stand at 3314.92 while the All Share Index (NASI) was up 0.98% to settle at 172.84. The NSE 25 Share Index stood 4523.40, adding 49.66 points.

In the Telecommunication Sector, Safaricom was the week’s biggest mover with 21 million shares valued at Ksh604 million traded as its CEO returned to active duty on Monday. The giant telco’s chief executive had been away for nine months on an extended medical leave.

Valued at between Ksh28 and Ksh28.25, Safaricom’s transaction represented 34.79% of the week’s traded value.

Other Sectors

The Banking Sector saw shares worth Ksh818 million change hands, accounting for 47.13% of the week’s traded value.

KCB Group actively moved 9.5M shares valued at Ksh478 million during the week at between Ksh48 and Ksh51.50. Equity Group Holdings closed the week 4.57% higher to Ksh52.50 moving 3.9 million shares valued at Ksh202 million. Barclays Bank up 3.42% to Ksh12.30 moved
1.5 million shares worth Ksh18.3 million.

Shares worth Ksh13.4 million representing 0.77 % of the week’s traded value were transacted in the Construction Sector. Bamburi Cement moved 39,000 shares valued at Ksh7 million during the week at between Ksh180 and Ksh181. ARM Cement moved 1.1 million shares valued at Ksh5.3 million and closed at Ksh4.50.

The Energy & Petroleum Sector had shares worth Ksh75.9 million transacted which accounted for 4.37% of the week’s traded value. KenolKobil moved 2.5 million valued Ksh45.1 million at between Ksh17.75 and Ksh18. Kengen moved 3 million shares worth Ksh18.9 million and closed the week at Ksh6.55.

Insurance Sector had shares worth Ksh33 million traded & accounted for 1.90% of the week’s
turnover. CIC lost 7.14% to close the week at Ksh4.55 with shares worth Ksh19.6 million transacted. Kenya Re down 1.23% to Ksh16.05 had 385,000 shares worth Ksh6.2 million realized.

The Investment Sector had shares worth Ksh6.7 million traded & accounted for 0.39% of the week’s turnover. Centum Investment unchanged at Ksh34 moved 142,000 shares worth Ksh4.8 million. Home Afrika moved 1.7 million shares worth Ksh1.28 million and closed the week at Ksh0.75.

The Manufacturing & Allied Sector had shares worth Ksh148 million transacted which represented 8.53% of the week’s traded value. E.A Breweries saw 645,000 shares valued at Ksh143 million changing hands at between Ksh217 and Ksh229.

The Bond Market meanwhile registered increased activity with bonds worth Ksh10.8 billion transacting compared to Ksh9.6 billion posted the previous week.
