NSE Derivatives Market Turnover Hits past KSh 1 Billion

NSE (Nairobi Securities Exchange) has surpassed the KSh 1 billion turnover mark to KSh 1,008,460,024 year to date in 2026. According to the NSE Chief Executive Officer Frank Mwiti, this milestone reflects the strength of the bourse, the trust of participants and the shared commitment to building deeper liquidity, expanding access and creating new opportunities for investors.

The derivatives market at the NSE, also known as NEXT, was launched in 2019 and is regulated by the Capital Markets Authority. It is the second exchange-traded derivatives market in Africa.

What trades at the Derivatives market is single stock futures, that is taking a bet on future price of a single firm through the purchase of a contract, The NSE derivatives market covers 15 liquid stocks-Safaricom, KCB, Equity, Absa, NCBA, Co-op Bank, I&M Bank, EABL, BAT Kenya, StanChart Bank, Kenya Power, KenGen, Kenya Re, Liberty and Britam.

The Derivatives market also has Equity Index Futures, which tracks NSE 25 Share Index and not necessarily one listed firm. It also tracks the mini NSE 25 and mini NSE 10 for retail investors.

In June 19th 2026, the bourse introduced options on futures contracts where an investor gets the right but not an obligation to buy/sell a futures contract at an agreed price. This is available on Safaricom, KCB, Equity, Coop, I&M and KenGen.

The derivatives market is still small and illiquid compared to equities, and is mainly used for hedging and speculation.

Meanwhile, when trading ended at the bourse on 24th September 2026, the market recorded a volume of 24.39 million shares in 12,928 deals with a turnover of KSh 1,183,257,415.61.

The market therefore closed in the green and remains bullish with volume up 42% and turnover up 83% while number of deals fell 7%.

Out of the 59 counters, there were 33 gainers and 15 losers.

The top gainers were led by Uchumi which was up 20% to KSh 1.62, followed by Africa Mega Agricorp up 9.48%, Sameer Africa up 8.02% and Umeme up 4.59%.

The top losers were BOC Kenya which declined by 3.24% to KSh 186.50 followed by Nation Media Group, Shri Krishana Overseas and Car& General.

Big Movers Were led by Safaricom 4.84 million, NSE Limited 4.47 million, I&M Holdings 3.11 million and KCB Group 2.81 million.
