Film production site Longcross Studios, where blockbusters including Guardians of the Galaxy, Skyfall and Doctor Strange were filmed, is set for a major redevelopment after receiving planning approval to expand its facilities.
Owner Netflix has secured permission to build additional sound stages and flexible backlot production space across the studio’s 26-hectare (64-acre) campus on Chobham Lane near Chertsey, Surrey.
The site spans two local authorities—Runnymede Borough Council and Surrey Heath Borough Council—both of which approved the plans after coordinating their review process.
Planning officers told Runnymede’s committee that the development would deliver economic benefits locally while supporting the wider UK film and television sector. The project will allow Netflix to increase production capacity in the borough.
As part of the agreement, the company also committed to contributing toward improved accessibility at Longcross railway station.
Local officials backed the proposal, citing employment opportunities and long-term economic activity for the area.
Longcross was originally developed as a tank-testing facility for military researchers before being converted into a film studio in 2006. Netflix acquired the site in 2021, identifying parts of the complex as outdated and in need of modernization.
In June 2025, Runnymede Borough Council unanimously approved a separate application that made the studio’s film production use permanent.
