Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata, a longtime ally of President William Ruto, made a striking public appearance Sunday with the citizen-driven Linda Mwananchi movement at a rally in Thika, Kiambu County.
This is less than a month after announcing he would not seek re-election as governor on the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, citing fundamental differences over political strategy, citizen engagement, and policy direction.
His participation in the opposition-leaning event marks one of the most significant official defections yet from the president’s inner circle ahead of future electoral battles, mainly the 2027 General Elections.
In a statement released May 3, 2026, Kang’ata framed his departure from UDA as a matter of principle rather than personal animosity. He expressed gratitude for his long relationship with President Ruto, which dates back to 2013 when he served as Member of Parliament for Kiharu. Kang’ata later served as senator and Senate Majority Whip before becoming governor.
“Over the years, as MP, senator, and now governor, we have worked closely in advancing shared goals for our people,” he said at the time.
“Leadership must be anchored in persuasion, not pressure; in dialogue, not coercion,” Kang’ata added, warning that rising political tensions could erode democratic norms.
At Sunday’s rally in Thika, Kang’ata reinforced his new direction, declaring in Swahili: “I believe Kenya is one, and Linda Mwananchi has brought Kenyans together.”
The Thika gathering drew thousands of supporters and highlighted the growing momentum of Linda Mwananchi, a movement positioning itself as a defender of constitutionalism, accountability, and ordinary citizens’ rights. It also featured prominent new faces in the opposition fold, including former Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo.
Odhiambo, whose recent alignment with the movement has stirred considerable interest in legal and political circles, confirmed her attendance on X and helped mobilize supporters. Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna formally welcomed her into the fold just days earlier, hailing her as a strong addition to the coalition.
Other key figures at the rally included Siaya Governor James Orengo and Suba South MP Caroli Omondi and Babu Owino.
Participants began the day with a church service at AIPCA Thika Cathedral before moving to Kivulini Grounds for the main political event.
