Former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s daughter, Ngina Kenyatta, last year got married in a private wedding to Alex Mwai. Alex is the son of Sam Mwai, an accomplished figure in the sports and hospitality sectors, who has held positions including Chairman of the Sports Stadia Management Board (SSMB), General Manager of Karen Country Club and, most recently, CEO of Maiyan Luxury Resort in Nanyuki, part of Centum Investment’s larger Maiyan development.
His son Alex, is however, also an accomplished investor and corporate operator in his own right. He is currently the Investment Director at Hesabu Capital, a Nairobi-based Venture Capital (VC) firm that has invested in startups including agritech platform Apollo Agriculture and social entrepreneurship startup Jibu – which enables individuals to set up water distribution franchises in African countries including Kenya.
Hesabu Capital is led by Kitili Mbathi as Managing Director. Mbathi has over 35 years experience in Africa’s banking sector and currently also serves as Chairman of banking group Stanbic Holdings’ board of directors in Kenya
Mwai has previously served in a raft of roles in the private sector, including Corporate Finance Senior Analyst at Genghis Capital between 2014 and 2015, Senior Associate – Transaction Services at PWC, between 2015 and 2017, and in Commercial Development at renewable energy firm PowerGen between 2019 and 2020.

He joined Hesabu Capital as an investment director in October 2021. Mwai has also sat on the board of Kenya Red Cross-owned TV station Switch TV.
He is the holder of an Anthropology degree from Durham University in the United Kingdom as well as a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from IE Business School in Madrid, Spain.
As his father revealed in a July interview, Mwai has been in a relationship with Ngina Kenyatta for over 12 years.
“They’ve been together for more than 12 years, so it was inevitable that they would start a family at some point,” he told Business Daily.
