Chief Justice David Maraga is in a mourning mood following the death of Kirinyaga Environment and Land Court Judge Samuel Mukunya in a road accident in Nyeri on Thursday night.

According to media reports, Justice Mukunya died in a crash at Embassy area along Nyeri-Nyahururu Road when he lost control of his Land Cruiser V8 and hit a canter. He was alone in the vehicle while driving towards Mweiga.

“Both vehicles were extensively damaged. He died while police were taking him to Nyeri County Referral Hospital. He was alone. We did not identify him immediately. We learned this morning that he was a judge,” Nyeri Base Commander Castarais Mugo told the Daily Nation.

The body was taken to the hospital’s mortuary.

“I have learnt with great sadness about the demise of Judge Samuel Mukunya of the Environment and Land Court through a tragic road accident this morning. Judge Mukunya, a personal friend of many years, was an outstanding jurist. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends,” Maraga tweeted on learning about the death.
