The ADvTECH Group (ADvTECH), which acquired Makini Schools in 2018, announced on 22nd November that it has concluded an agreement to acquire a 100% interest in Flipper International School in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, reinforcing its position as the leading provider of private education in Africa. The acquisition will add five schools and approximately 3,000 students to the group’s international portfolio.

The move aligns with ADvTECH’s Schools Division strategy to expand its footprint in East Africa, catering to the growing demand for private education. It also marks the group’s second major expansion in the region since 2018, when the company acquired Makini Group of Schools and established Crawford International School, both in Kenya.

“We are delighted to welcome Flipper International Schools to the ADvTECH Group and remain committed to its founding ethos. Furthermore, the acquisition positions us well to grow our presence in the Ethiopian market, as well as expand our scale across the continent,” ADvTECH CEO Geoff Whyte said.

Founded in 1998 by Menna Selamu Bekele and Serkaddis Seifu Yeteshawork, Flipper International School has earned a reputation for its academic excellence. With support from Saham Group (Saham) and Tana Africa Capital (Tana), the school has achieved significant growth over the last five years, including the development of a state-of-the-art campus in Addis Ababa’s Summit area.

Sharing their thoughts on the acquisition Menna and Serkaddis said: “We are incredibly proud of what we have built at Flipper International School. Our mission has always been to be a beacon of academic excellence in the region. We are confident that ADvTECH’s expertise and resources will help the school further enhance the educational experience and growth opportunities for students and staff.”

“We officially welcome Flipper International Schools into the ADvTECH Group. In line with our mission, our commitment is to build on the foundations that were laid by the founders who built an excellent reputation for providing quality education. With this milestone, Flipper International Schools will have access to expertise and support in Academics, IT, HR, Properties and Legal to mention a few,” said Mr Horace Mpanza, ADvTECH Regional Managing Director responsible for Makini Schools in Kenya, Gaborone International School in Botswana, and now Flipper International Schools.

Acquisition opens avenues for benchmarking and sharing best practices to drive student performance.

Flipper International School operates five campuses located in Beklobet, in central Addis Ababa, and Summit, in the eastern part of the city. As Addis Ababa experiences rapid urbanisation, the demand for high-quality education has grown significantly, presenting ADvTECH with an ideal opportunity to diversify its portfolio and expand into a promising new market.

“This acquisition opens avenues for benchmarking and sharing best practices to drive student performance. Both our employees and management will also benefit from professional development programs and the chance to network with 110 other ADvTECH schools,” Mr Mpanza said.
