Governor James Orengo has confirmed that construction of the long-awaited Usenge Port in Siaya County is finally set to begin.

In a statement shared via his social media post on Tuesday, September 2, Orengo revealed that his administration had concluded extensive discussions with the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) led by its Managing Director, Captain William Ruto.

The talks paved the way for KPA to take over the Usenge site and begin construction within the coming weeks.

The governor noted that the move would not only boost transport and trade in Siaya but also open up fresh opportunities for investment, tourism, and economic growth across the Lake Victoria region.

The port, once complete, is expected to enhance connectivity, create jobs, and transform Usenge into a hub of commercial activity.

“The County Government of Siaya team this morning held conclusive discussions with Captain William Ruto and his Kenya Ports Authority team. We are pleased that KPA will soon occupy the site at Usenge and commence construction of the port within the next week or two,” Orengo said.

The Usenge Port project has been on the table for more than a decade. It has always been seen as a strategic hub to open up trade across Lake Victoria, linking western Kenya to Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda.

Although earlier plans stalled due to funding and logistical challenges, consistent lobbying by local leaders and cooperation with national agencies ensured the idea never died.

County officials say the new port will immediately create job opportunities and help spark long-term economic growth.

It is expected to support fishermen, traders and transport operators while attracting new investments into Siaya. The port’s location on Lake Victoria is also seen as a major boost for cargo handling, which will help reduce transportation costs for businesses.

During discussions with the county leadership, KPA officials led by Captain William Ruto shared timelines, resources and operational plans for the construction.

The county government pledged full support, including helping with land access, security and other logistical needs to ensure smooth progress.

Residents and stakeholders have welcomed the development, saying the project has the potential to transform the county’s economy, create fresh business opportunities and elevate Siaya as a key trade hub in the region.

Earlier this year, President William Ruto also pledged a financial package of one billion shillings for Siaya’s blue economy. Out of this, six hundred million shillings was earmarked for upgrading Usenge Pier and port facilities, while four hundred million shillings was directed towards building a modern fish market.

The investments are meant to reduce post-harvest losses, improve infrastructure and strengthen trade within the Lake Victoria region.

With KPA now preparing to take over the site, the long-awaited Usenge Port is finally on course to become a reality. It is expected to serve not only Siaya County but also the wider lake region as a driver of trade, jobs and economic transformation.
