A total of 130 households have been displaced after their houses were washed away following heavy rains at Thiguku village in Kirinyaga county. Heavy rains which pounded the area on Tuesday night left the village flooded making the area inhabitable.

The affected families said their children were unable to go to school after their uniforms and books were soaked by the flood water.

Patrick Mwaniki, one of the affected people, said he lost some of his domestic animals which were unable to wade out of the deep waters. “I had my two zero grazing cows and a dairy goat which could not be saved from their flooded sheds as the rains continued the whole night only to find the dead animals floating dead”, he said.

The families have also appealed to the Kenya Red Cross Society to send them tents which they can use for alternative accommodation at a nearby open public ground.

“Yes , some of our neighbors can accommodate us for  a day or two but we need to organize ourselves so that we do not cause  any inconveniences to the host families,” Mwaniki said.

During last year’s heavy rains the same calamity befell the residents who   had to move to the open ground and lived in the tents for over six months
