Kenya’s football fraternity is mourning the death of former Gor Mahia F.C. and Kenya national football team midfielder Allan Thigo, who passed away on May 9, 2026.
Thigo is remembered as one of the most influential midfielders in Kenyan football history, having played a central role in Gor Mahia’s rise during the 1970s and early 1980s.
“It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of former player and coach Allan Thigo, a figure whose dedication and passion for football was remarkable.” Gor stated.
His death marks the end of an era for a generation of Kenyan football fans who watched him dominate local football with his leadership, technical ability and goal-scoring prowess from midfield.
Thigo spent most of his career at Gor Mahia after joining the club from Kisumu Hot Stars in 1970. During his time with K’Ogalo, he helped the club win multiple league titles and guided the team to the final of the 1979 African Cup Winners’ Cup — one of the greatest achievements by a Kenyan club on the continental stage.
Between 1970 and 1981, he scored 88 goals for the club, making him one of Gor Mahia’s highest-scoring players despite operating as a midfielder.
“Thigo had a solid 12 seasons with us between 1970 – 1981, scoring 88 goals and leading us as a player / coach to the 1976 league title unbeaten. He was also part of the squad in 1979 Africa Cup Winners Cup. His contribution to Kenyan football and Gor Mahia family will always be remembered,” Gor stated.
At the international level, Thigo earned 81 caps for Kenya and scored 11 goals for the national team. He was part of the Harambee Stars squad that qualified for the 1972 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon — Kenya’s first-ever appearance at the continental tournament.
Beyond his playing career, Thigo also served Kenyan football as a coach, including a stint managing Gor Mahia in 2008. He remained actively involved in football development and mentorship long after retirement, earning admiration from former players and fans alike.
In 2018, he was inducted into the Kenya Football Hall of Fame in recognition of his contribution to the sport and his enduring legacy in Kenyan football.
Tributes have continued to pour in from players, clubs and supporters, many describing him as one of the finest football minds Kenya has ever produced.
His passing leaves yet another gap in Kenya’s football history, but his influence on Gor Mahia, Harambee Stars and generations of upcoming players is expected to endure for years to come.
