The 63rd Kenya Schools and Colleges National Drama and Film Festival, held this month in Nakuru County, crowned its secondary school winners, celebrating a vibrant display of theatrical talent while navigating a storm of controversy that recently underscored the power of student voices in Kenya’s cultural landscape – as far as Butere Girls High School is concerned.
The festival, a cornerstone of the country’s educational and artistic calendar, saw hundreds of secondary schools compete across categories, including plays, solo verses, cultural dances, modern dance, stand-up comedy, and narratives.
Moi Mbiruri Boys High School stole the spotlight with Classmates, a play that, through deft storytelling and powerful performances, wove a narrative of societal challenges in defining success in today’s world.
The production earned the school the number one position in the play category and a coveted slot to perform at the Presidential Concert at State House, Nakuru, attended by President William Ruto and dignitaries such as Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba.
