Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) is back to sponsor the Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) for the next three years. KCB had stepped down as title sponsors of KNRC and Safari Rally and took a new role as official banking partners for the Rally and other motorsports disciplines, from 2017.

KCB confirmed of the sponsorship at the annual Motorsport awards ceremony that were held in Nairobi on Saturday evening in Nairobi through its Director for Marketing and Communication Angela Mwirigi.

“I wish to reassure you that we will continue with our sponsorship for Motorsports this year. The next three years will be vital for us as we gear up for the return of the World Rally Championship to Kenya and Africa,” Mwirigi said in her speech.

Even though KCB did not disclose the value of the sponsorship, the move is set to improve motorsports in this country and edge it closer to other sports in the country. Kenya Motor Sports Federation chairman Phineas Kimathi said that the new deal will lower the entry fee for KNRC events encouraging more drivers to participate. Just a year ago, the entry fee had rocketed to almost Ksh 50,000 from a previous 12,000 repelling most of the competitors from the events.

As a result of the new deal, Each of the eight organising clubs will now receive Sh2 million in addition to medical services package which will include an ambulance and a helicopter.

At the ceremony navigator Tuta Mionki, a student at the Abdul Sidi Rally Academy (ASRA) was voted the Motorsports Personality of The Season for her achievements in the Sport. Tuta is the first female to win the award since the ceremony debuted. She edged reigning KNRC champion Carl Tundo and his co-driver Tim Jessop to the prestigious award of the night.
