KBC to air parliamentary committee proceedings

The national broadcaster, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, will soon start broadcasting live parliamentary committee proceedings.

Parliament’s broadcasting committee toured KBC to engage with the management on how best to improve coverage of parliamentary business.

KBC management, however, decried inadequate finances as the main challenge inhibiting broadcasting services.

MPs and the management concurred on the need to extend the parliamentary live coverage to accommodate committee sittings.

Currently, KBC airs live plenary proceedings both from the National Assembly and the Senate, on TV and its Idhaa ya Taifa radio station.

Three vernacular FM stations also air summary of the business being transacted on the floor of Parliament.

MPs were, however, concerned that the digital Signet platform where Bunge TV and Senate TV are hosted is only available in Nairobi and its precincts.

KBC’s management decried inadequate funding as the main challenge derailing service delivery.

Last financial year, the national broadcaster received about Ksh 400 million from the national government against a request of Ksh 3 billion hampering investment in broadcast infrastructure.

The national broadcaster’s management committed to engage the parliamentary committee on amendments to the KBC act aimed at improving corporation’s service delivery.
