Jumia’s annual Black Friday online shopping promotion will be spread over one month this year. The company says Black Friday, its biggest annual sale, will start on 13th November to 13th December, covering 31 days.

During Black Friday month, Jumia will offer huge deals and discounts on various products, including home appliances, fashion items, smart phones and other electronic products, among others.

Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States (the fourth Thursday of November), which marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the US and most major retailers offer promotional sales to reward customers and increase sales.

Black Friday shopping has been promoted in Kenya mainly by Jumia with a number of retailers now taking the cue. Jumia Managing Director Sam Chappatte says its customers will enjoy up to 80 percent discount. Jumia has more than 5,000 vendors on the platform and this year.

Jumia is also giving vendors as an incentive to drive the Black Friday promotional sale, which include affordable soft loans to finance inventories and working capital during the promotion. Under the Jumia Lending platform, vendors will access online loans at interest rates of between 1 and 3 percent.

Mr Chappatte said vendors are already taking up the loans as they prepare to stock their shops for the Black Friday sale. Besides the loans, vendors who make the highest sale will be rewarded with a week-long trip to Bangkok, Thailand.
