Harambee Stars midfielder Johanna Omolo is the latest addition to the ranks of Turkish Lig 1 side Kocaelispor, with the club confirming his signing on Wednesday, August 4.

Omolo joins the club as a free agent in a deal valued at an estimated 450,000 Euros (Ksh57 million). He left his former club BB Erzurumspor following their relegation from the Turkish Super Lig.

According to reports from Turkish press including Kocaelihalkgazetesi, the deal will see Omolo earn around 31,000 Euros (Ksh4 million) a month.

There was reported interest in his signature from clubs in Turkey and Belgium where he previously had a stint at Cercle Brugge before siging for Erzurumspor. Omolo has played in Europe since 2007.

His new club, 55-year old Kocaelispor is eyeing a return to the top-flight league after an absence of almost two decades, and has been linked with moves for several players during the transfer window including Petrus Boumal, Oltan Karakullukçu, Manuel Da Costa and Gabriel Obertan.

So far, the club has signed former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Dino Ndlovu on a free transfer from Chinese League One side Zhejiang Greentown.

31-year old Omolo is set to inject experience, stability and technical quality in the midfield, where he typically plays as a holding midfielder.

He got his first call-up to the national team, Harambee Stars, in 2011, and was part of the squad that represented Kenya at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2019. At the tournament, Omolo famously scored in a 3-2 win over Tanzania although Kenya crashed out at the group stage.

Notably, Omolo is involved in philanthropic work through his Johana Omolo foundation, which mainly operates in Dandora where the player was raised.

The foundation works to uplift underprivileged children and youth in Dandora, empowering them through sports, education and a range of other initiatives.
