How Makau Mutua Turned His Home Into Luxury Hotel

Makau Mutua is an accomplished Kenyan scholar and political operator, and one of the Azimio coalition leader Raila Odinga’s top advisors.

Mutua has worked as a Law professor at universities in the US including SUNY Buffalo School of Law, where he was the Dean between 2008 and 2014. He has also served as a consultant for organizations including the World Bank and in various human rights organizations.

In 2022, Mutua ploughed some of his cash into the establishment of a luxury resort in his backyard, literally. Mutua converted his home into a popular multi-million shilling luxury resort, complete with a swimming pool, bar, gym, restaurant, meeting rooms and luxurious accommodation.

Kitui Villa was opened at a ceremony in  2022 attended by Azimio leaders Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka.

It incorporates 8 luxury rooms, with a jacuzzi as well as outdoor dining areas. Its chefs specialize in a variety of cuisines including sumptuous African meals.

The resort also offers guests high-speed wireless Internet, laundry services and parking.

It regularly hosts events including swanky cocktail parties, and has managed to secure a spot as one of the top hotels in Kitui. It is also frequented by the political elite in the region, with high-profile meetings held at the facility.

Mutua was Odinga’s top adviser in his unsuccessful 2022 Presidential bid. He has continued to be a key backer of Odinga and Azimio’s escalating anti-government protests over issues including the cost of living and the Finance Act 2023.
