Radio presenter suspended for mocking student’s killing

Ms Ivy Wangeci was hacked to death outside the Moi National Teaching and Referral Hospital with an axe by Naftali Njahi Kinuthia, who had been stalking her for love.

Homeboyz Radio has suspended a presenter and pulled the plug on its evening show, “Mtaani” after he claimed Moi University medical student Ivy Wangechi was brutally killed by her boyfriend because she was cheating on him.

Ms Wangeci was hacked to death outside the Moi National Teaching and Referral Hospital on Tuesday with an axe by Naftali Njahi Kinuthia, who said to have been a former colleague in primary school who had been stalking her in search of love.

During the show, Didge, the Homeboyz Radio presenter posed: “She died because she wasn’t loyal. That is the honest truth, right? Yeah, alidead juu hakuwa loyal, sindio?”

He went on to warn ladies to be careful about whom they date warning they are wont to be killed in similar circumstances.

Even as the remarks enraged Kenyans on Twitter, another of Didge’s co-presenters, Miss Katiwa, added: “This was a woman who was fully being taken care of [by the man], but she wasn’t grateful. Instead, she opted to cheat on him. Maybe she was fulfilling the man’s sexual needs because he was supporting her, perhaps financially.”

In a statement, Homeboz Radio’s management tweeted: “Last night (Tuesday, April 9) on Homeboyz 103.5 FM during the show Mtaani, one of our presenters made a comment regarding the recent killing of a student of Moi University. After reviewing the show recording, we have found the comments to be in extremely poor taste and apologise without reservation. We have removed the show from the schedule pending further internal investigation.”

“The presenter in question has also been immediately suspended by the station. While the show is on air, we will take necessary steps to ensure that such a lapse doesn’t happen again,” it added.
