Hero MotoCorp, the India-based manufacturer of motorbikes and scooters, on Thursday, January 21 surpassed 100 million units in cumulative production.
The milestone cemented Hero’s place as the world’s largest manufacturer of motorcycles and scooters, in terms of unit volumes sold by a single company in a year. The 100 millionth bike – an Xtreme 160R – rolled off the firm’s assembly line at their plant in Haridwar, in the northern Indian hill state of Uttarakhand.
The achievement was driven by the company’s global expansion into new markets in the past decade, including in Africa and South America.
Hero entered Kenya in 2013, its first foray into the continent before expanding into other countries including Nigeria and Ivory Coast.
Notably, 50 million of the 100 million bikes and scooters were produced in the last seven years.
To celebrate the milestone, six special edition models were unveiled at the 27-year old company’s facility in Uttarakhand.
The models – Splendor+, Xtreme 160R, Passion Pro, Glamour (motorcycles) and Destini 125, Maestro Edge 110 (scooters) – will go on sale from February 2021.

Dr Pawan Munjal, Managing Director at Hero MotorCorp, hailed the milestone even as he promised a focus on sustainable growth.
He noted that the firm sought to build value for local communities everywhere it operates, and acts as an economic multiplier with its sales, R&D and manufacturing ecosystems.
Munjal also spoke on the future, revealing Hero MotorCorp’s plans for the next five years.
The company plans on continually expanding its global footprint, as it has done so effectively in the recent past.
“Hero MotoCorp also has a steep growth target for its markets outside India. It will continue to grow its operations in these markets and also enter key markets in new geographies,” it noted.
It also plans to introduce over 10 products in the next five years – including variants, refreshes and upgrades – every year.
Hero MotorCorp further disclosed plans to prioritize research and development as it looks to create new mobility solutions. The company also plans on adopting best practices to cut carbon emissions.
“Hero MotoCorp will continue to reduce its carbon footprint through its green facilities and fuel-efficient products,” the firm stated.
